Travel Light! Leaving Your Baggage Behind

travel light changing lives art

The year was 2000 when hip-hopper, Erykah Badu released the hit entitled, Bag Lady:

“… Bag lady you gone hurt your back
Dragging all them bags like that …
One day all them bags gone get in your way
So pack light …
Bag lady
Let it go, Let it go, Let it go, Let it go … “

Pretty good advice, right?

When Jesus sent out his disciples in Matthew 10:10, He said: “Take no bag for your journey…”

You see, God has an amazing journey planned for you, but in order for you to experience it, you gotta let go of some baggage and travel light!

As we move forward into this new year, we would do well to heed these words of Jesus (and Badu, for that matter)—pack light; let go; let go; let go of your baggage—and enjoy the journey God intended for you!

With that in mind, I want to encourage you to leave a few things behind in order to step into the great destiny God has for you! Leave behind:

1. Unforgiveness. Don’t wait for a feeling. Forgiveness is not a feeling. Its a choice. Refuse to hold anything against anyone for any reason. The Word says, don’t let the sun go down on your anger. We aren’t wired to hold a grudge through the night. Let it go. Its a choice. And its a gift we’ve freely received from God. And its a gift, therefore, we should freely give. That’s why the middle part of the word: ‘for-give-ness’ is ‘give’. Its a gift! If you will choose to give this gift and leave unforgiveness behind, you will begin to step into your destiny, care-free, light-hearted and happier than you’ve been in a long time!

2. Guilt. Guilt is a tool of the devil to keep us confined to our mistakes and defined by our past. When we carry guilt with us, it makes us depressed; it makes us angry; and it makes us feel lonely. We’ve all blown it, but Jesus wants to free you from a guilty conscience. There is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ. Embrace God’s grace! Accept your forgiveness. In Hebrews 8:12 God says, “I will remember your sins NO MORE!” the verdict is in. Jesus declares you: Not guilty! When you accept this merciful verdict, anger leaves; condemnation leaves; confidence grows; and your faith soars! Anything becomes possible, when you realize how free you really are. Let it go!

3. Small Expectations. When Abraham was childless, God took him OUTSIDE and said: “LOOK UP and count the stars if you’re able! That’s how many descendants you’re going to have!” (Genesis 15:5.) In order to experience the best God has for you this year, and any year, we have to ditch low expectations, lift up our head; LOOK UP; and expect God to do exceeding abundantly beyond what we can ask or think! To live a life beyond our wildest thoughts or dreams starts by having some wild thoughts and wild dreams! Let go of a small God today. Let go of small expectations today. Think big today because you have a BIG GOD. Ask big today because you have a BIG GOD. Expect big today because you have a BIG BIG God! Dream…ON!

Decide today to leave these bags behind! As you do, you will leap, skip & soar into your God-given destiny! Travel light & Godspeed!

Who’ll Stop the Rain?

Authority Gregory Dickow

Who’ll Stop The Rain? (Walking in Your God-Given Authority)

I was listening to the radio the other day, and an old classic from Creedence Clearwater Revival came on, the one that asks, “Who’ll Stop The Rain?” Whether you’ve heard of it or not, we can ALL identify with the lyrics!

“Long as I remember the rain been comin’ down.
Clouds of mystery pourin’ confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages tryin’ to find the sun.
And I wonder, still I wonder, who’ll stop the rain?”

We are living in times where these lyrics have never been more true! It’s raining! And most Christians don’t believe they can do anything about it. It’s raining fear. It’s raining terror. It’s raining depression, discouragement, sickness, and disease. It’s raining family problems, emotional problems, and financial problems. As the song says, “There are a lot of clouds of confusion pouring on the ground.” And we, as Christians, are good men and women trying to find the sun, but it’s time that we become the people who do more than look for good things to happen. It’s time for us to learn to stop the rain!

So I’m writing to tell you today — YOU HAVE THE POWER TO STOP THE RAIN IN
YOUR LIFE! YOU have authority and power to RISE UP, take control, and put an end to these storms of “rain” in your life! That’s right! As a child of God, you have been given dominion!

“Let man have dominion over the earth.” — Genesis 1:26

DOMINION: noun do·min·ion \də-ˈmi-nyən\ : the power to rule…

God gave the original right of dominion on this earth to Adam and Eve. They surrendered this dominion to Satan in the Fall. But, through the victory of Jesus on the Cross, He purchased back dominion & authority with His own precious blood. That’s good news! But the good news gets even better!

Jesus said in Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give YOU authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and OVER ALL THE POWER OF THE ENEMY, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Wow! — I hope you got that! Jesus won back the right of dominion through His death and resurrection. And then — He gave this authority to you and me! We have authority on this earth!

I’m declaring today, YOU CAN STOP THE RAIN!

So then, you’re probably asking the question, “But Greg, how do I stop the rain?” Well, I’m glad you asked. Let’s look at an example of a man who actually did it!

James 5:16–17: …The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

Effective, fervent prayer from a righteous man avails much! THAT IS THE KEY TO STOPPING THE RAIN!

So why are we as Christians allowing THE RAIN to keep falling?

The enemy gets us falling for the lie that God is in control of everything. The truth is, God is NOT in control of everything. If God were in control of your marriage, you’d be happier. If God were in control of your kids, they would be a little more obedient. 🙂

Through Jesus, we have the dominion on this earth! We get to decide the kind of day, attitude, marriage, and health we’re going to have! We could turn that over into the hand of the enemy if we want… but God has given us the responsibility AND authority to pray and stop the rain!

So, once we get past that lie, what’s the next thing the enemy tries to do? He goes to attack the basis for our ability to pray and stop the rain. He gets us trapped in religion — am I truly righteous? Have I done enough good deeds? Am I holy enough?

Listen, friends — we don’t become righteous through any action on our part! Righteousness is a gift! Romans 5:17 says, “For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign — have dominion — in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”

We are righteous through the gift of Jesus, NOT through our own actions. Ah, you need more proof of this, right? Here’s what James 5 and verse 17 says about Elijah, the original rain stopper: “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.”

You see, Elijah had a nature like ours — a human nature — yet he was able to offer up the type of prayer that literally stopped the rain! If you look back over the life of Elijah, he had ups and downs just like you and me. Yet, none of his human flaws disqualified him from this type of prayer power! And you’re no different — your human flaws don’t disqualify YOU from stopping the rain in your life and in your world!

It’s time for us as believers to step up and onto the scene and stop the rain like Elijah did. It’s time to take our families back, take our communities back, take our dreams back, and take our land back! We can’t put our head in the sand and live in fear any longer. We’ve got to stop running and start commanding the rain to stop! Jesus said in Matthew 18:18, “Whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatsoever we loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” In other words, heaven will forbid what WE forbid; and heaven will allow what WE allow.

Are you ready to stop the rain? I sure am! And I’m sure you feel the same way. All that’s needed is for us to take dominion, stop believing the lie of the enemy, and pray according to the righteousness that is ours through Christ and WE WILL AVAIL MUCH IN THE EARTH! Amen?

Tornado Love

Tornado Love

Love is invincible facing danger and death.

Passion laughs at the terrors of hell.

The fire of love stops at nothing —

it sweeps everything before it.

Flood waters can’t drown love,

torrents of rain can’t put it out—Song of Solomon 8:7

God’s love is a BEAUTIFUL DISASTER! When it hits you, it’s going to be a like a tornado. Listen to Solomon’s description again—It’s invincible. It laughs at terror; it stops at nothing; and nothing can stop it! WOW! That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what God feels toward you!

It sweeps everything before it. God’s love sweeps away…

… our sin.

… our loneliness.

… our pain.

… our fears.

…When the love of God hits you the way I’m praying it will, NOTHING WILL REMAIN THE SAME!

It’s going to wreck your old fears and limitations; it’s going to ruin your old view of yourself and others; it’s going to sweep you off of your feet and take you to a place that you’ve never been before.

God’s love comes in like a storm in our lives … not to hurt us, but to blow away what has been hurting us; to destroy what is destroying us; to bring disaster to what has been bringing disaster to us all our lives.

He comes with a vengeance. But his vengeance is not against you. It’s against the things that are hurting you.

He takes vengeance out on fear; He takes His vengeance out on anxiety, sickness and lack; He takes His vengeance out on anything that tries to hurt His precious children–Everything that has ever tried to get in the way between you and Him. For God is a jealous God.

Do you want an encounter with God like that? Do you want a Christianity like that – a Christianity that is so full of love and power that it changes you? So full of goodness and mercy that follows you, seeks you and chases you down?

You see, God doesn’t have to be chased by us. His love is so great, that He’s the one who chases us!

The prodigal son’s father didn’t wait for his son to get all the way home. As soon as he saw a glimpse of his son in the corner of his eye far off in the distance…

he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him continually. Luke 15:20

That’s aggressive, invincible, tornado love! That’s the love of God! The father didn’t wait for the son to clean up his act; or change his clothes, or become a servant. The son just turned toward his father, and the Father came running, chasing, embracing, kissing, blessing & healing!

God is chasing you down with His goodness & love!

The bride in Song of Solomon 2:16 says, “My lover is mine and I am his”.

We belong to each other! When you discover that this is the kind of relationship God wants to have with you, it changes how you look at yourself; how you look at Him, and how you look at others. You are no longer alone in this fight to try to conquer life and conquer sin. You are ONE WITH HIM. He is yours and you are His. This love-relationship conquers all. This love never fails. This love gives you purpose and meaning and reason to live. It gives you something to look forward to every day of your life.

All the temptations of the enemy are temptations to doubt God’s love for us. When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he said “Throw yourself down from here. Your angels will catch you” (Luke 4:9, Matthew 4:6) And Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

What Jesus was saying at that point was in essence: “I won’t throw myself down, because God loves me too much … He has a plan for my life and there’s too much to live for. I am not going to kill myself because God’s love for me is too great and His purpose for me is too great. I am too significant to Him, I am too important to Him, too valuable to Him.”

You see the temptation to give up or give in, went away when Jesus reminded himself and the enemy that the Father loved him too much to let him throw his life away.

And that’s exactly how God feels about you!

Say to yourself: “I will not throw myself down because of low value or low self-worth, I am worth everything God paid for me. He wouldn’t have bought me with His blood if He didn’t love me. He wouldn’t have bought me with His blood if He didn’t value me. He wouldn’t have bought me with His blood if He didn’t think I was significant to Him.

God didn’t send his Son, Jesus, to die for what was insignificant … He died because

And that’s the kind of love that sweeps away all sin, loneliness, temptation, pain & fear. That’s tornado love! Get ready to be swept away!
